The federal 340B Drug Pricing Program has been helping covered entities expand and enhance their services for underserved populations since 1992. The idea was to require manufacturers to give significant discounts on outpatient drugs, clinic-administered drugs, over-the-counter drugs with prescriptions, biologics and insulin. The intent of the program was to provide affordable medicine to eligible patients and provide more comprehensive services.
The 340B Drug Pricing Program is one part of a safety net designed to support healthier communities. When the program began, eligibility was tightly focused on traditional safety-net hospitals, outpatient clinics, and community health centers. The program was successful and soon expanded to more points of care. The program is featured in communities across the country, and from rural hospitals to urban health systems, each community has its own mix of economic and demographic conditions to navigate. Each participating organization has flexibility with how they choose to channel its savings, so not every version of the program is the same. Yet, they all have the same purpose: to provide affordable healthcare for those in need.

Now, this program strongly focuses on the pharmaceutical aspect of healthcare. Still, in the future, we hope another program comes forward, or this one expands, to make more aspects of healthcare inclusive and affordable for everyone across the United States.
